Fine art paintings, drawings, and sculpture using handmade or commercial paper as the surface.

Incised Sculptural Color Series View Color Series Wall Layout
Series of 24 paintings each with a different color and sculptured design. Each piece in this series is the same size. They are intended to be displayed next to each other in order to show how both color, texture and depth influence the visual appearance. Paintings with more depth will be influenced more by light than paintings with less depth.

Style History: In the latter part of 1998, the flat + sculptural style morphed into what I call the sculptural painting style. The difference being that the entire painting is now one piece of incised handmade paper, instead of a small handmade paper abstract on commercial paper. My technique involves incising multiple tiny patterns by hand into hand-made paper plates and thus producing a result similar to chasing and repousse. The incised patterns vary in shape, design, size and even texture.

In some paintings the incised patterns add depth to an otherwise flat painting, whereas in many other paintings, small incised patterns create multiple patterns inside larger patterns inside the overall image. The challenge of my technique is how far the paper can be manipulated to achieve the desired look. No molds or forms are used in producing my sculptural paintings. Over time these paintings have became progressively larger, from as little as 16” x 16.5” to as large as 35” x 38”, and thus the incising work has required more and more planning and control of execution.
